Leb' Wohl Hawaii / Mondschein Von Honolulu (Switzerland - Decca 27119)

Comments: May 1948 seems to be the correct date of release date for this record!

In Mooi Kaluna / Blue Hawaii (Switzerland .- Decca 27120)

Comments: Great version of Blue Hawaii! One of their best early ones!

Missouri Waltz / Imi-Ami-Aui-Oe (France - Riviera 1099)

Comments: Super rare first French-only 2-sider! One of their best early ones!

Song Of The Islands / Moonlight In Waikiki (France - Riviera 1100)

Date Of Release: Unknown
Comments: Super rare second French-only 2-sider!

On The Beach Of Waikiki / Hawaiian Serenade (France - Riviera 1101

Date Of Release: Unknown
Comments: Super rare third and final French-only release! The flip side was written by the fantastic Swiss vibraphonist Body Buser, who also played on the record! One of their best ones!

Moonlight In Waikiki / ? (Foxtrott) (Switzerland - Tell TR115 / TR128)

Date Of Release: Unknown (it was never released)
Comments: Unique one of a kind acetate including two completely unreleased test-recordings from the quite big (and old) local Tell label. It unfortunately appears in broken condition (with one fairily small piece of wax missing), and is only playable for the last 2 thirds of the record. The matrice numbers read TR 115 for the a-side, coupled with TR 128 for the b-side.

Irgendwann Blueh'n Wieder Rote Rosen / Lied Aus Hawaii (Switzerland - Tell 29251)

Date Of Release: 1952
Comments: Their debut 78 rpm on the ancient long-gone Tell label out of Biningen, Basel, Switzerland.

12th Street Rag / Minnehaha - Minnedans (Switzerland - Tell 29252)

Date Of Release: 1952
Comments: First pressing with gold letterings!

Der Suedwind, Der Weht / Es Haengt Ein Pferdehalfter An Der Wand (Switzerland - Tell 29288)

Date Of Release: 1952
Comments: The flipside became one of their early hit records! All the first pressings on Tell came with gold ink on blue labels!

Der Suedwind, Der Weht / Es Haengt Ein Pferdehalfter An Der Wand (Switzerland - Tell 29288)

Date Of Release: 1952
Comments: 2nd pressing with silvery ink on blue labels!

Estrellita / Wenn Die Glocken Hell Erklingen (Switzerland - Tell 29289)

Date Of Release: 1952
Comments: First pressing with golden ink on blue Tell labels!

Papaveri E Papere / Volva Colomba (Switzerland - Elite Special 9134)

Date Of Release: November 1952
Comments: Ultra rare!!

THE OKINAWA HAWAIIANS - Tiger Rag / St. Louis Blues (Switzerland - Tell 29313)

Date Of Release: 1953
Comments: Werner Kunz, Robert Felix, and Ruedi Kunz of The Okinawa Hawaiians would later on join up with Walti Roost and Max Zimmerli to reform The Hula Hawaiians in 1955.

Pictured is the only reportedly known copy of The Okinawa Hawaiians ultra rare lone 78 that has survived!

St. Louis Blues actually plays an unique medley of St. Louis Blues that cuts into a hot version of Arthur Smith And The Crackerjacks' classic 1945 lead guitar instrumental the "Guitar Boogie" for about 90% of the song, before the track is closing out with St. Louis Blues again!

Nani Hawaii / Es Haengt Ein AUTOREIFEN An Der Wand (Switzerland - no label)

Date Of Recording: Ca. 1953
Comments: One of a kind acetate of long thought to be unreleased recordings! Nani Hawaii was definitely never released, and is only available on this impossible to find one-of-a-kind acetate! I'm not sure what year it was made in (this is if it was recorded before, or after Es Haengt Ein PFERDEHALFTER An Der Wand, or even at around the same time..), and we'll probably never know, because all the bandmembers from this lineup are already death. I would suppose that it was recorded at around the same time, and that it was guaranteed pre-dating the following record below! It was cut and recorded at the famous Max Lussi Tonstudio, in Basel city. The matrice numbers read 1-R 1 for the A-side, as well as 1-R 2 for the B-side.

Song Of The Island / Es Haengt Ein AUTOREIFEN An Der Wand (Switzerland - Tell 28314)

Date Of Release: Ca. 1953
Comments: Not even The Hula Hawaiians have been aware of the existance of THIS ultra rare record! It was issued without the bands knowledge. Checkout the funny "Radiag 1" and "Radiag 2" matrice numbers. The flip matches with the thought to be unreleased track from the unreleased demo record above! The A-Side plays Nani Hawaii, not Song Of The Island as you would guess by the wrong label info!

Hawaii-Perlen, Teil 1 (Potpourri) / Hawaii-Perlen, Teil 2 (Potpourri) / Hawaiian Serenade (Switzerland - Elite Special 9137)

Date Of Release: March 1953
Comments: Help!, I've never found this one! WANTED!!

Rhythm Of The Islands / Spatz Und Spaetzchen (Switzerland.- Tell 30009)

Date Of Release: 1953
Comments: Pretty cool 2-sider with hip female lead vocals courtesy of LILLY BEARTH, especially on the swinging off-beat flip!

Lebe Wohl Du Schwarze Rose / Stern Meiner Liebe (Switzerland - Tell 30017)

Date Of Release: 1953
Comments:

Leise Luawana Lieder / Zwischen Java Und Hawaii (Switzerland - Tell 30020)

Date Of Release: 1953
Comments:

Hula Blues / Hawaiian War Chant (Switzerland - Tell 30039)

Date Of Release: 1954
Comments: Ultra rare first pressing 78 of fantastic classic up-beat Hawaii 2-sider!

Holidali / Zucker-Lili (Switzerland - Tell 30040)

Date Of Release: 1954
Comments: With pretty hip femme lead vocals courtesy of LILLY BEARTH on the cool off-beat flipside!

Vor Hawaii, Vor Hawaii, Auf Der Lagune / Der Mond Von Mauna Loa (with The Aloha-Trio)(Switzerland - Elite Special 9220)

Date Of Release: June 1955
Comments: Help!, I'm still missing out of this one! WANTED!!

Kahula-Serenade / Hilo Marsch (Switzerland - Tell 30108)

Date Of Release: 1955
Comments: The Hilo Marsch became their biggest hit record, but is a super rare record as a 78!

Kilima Waltz / Rag Of Rags (Switzerland - Tell 30109)

Date Of Release: 1955
Comments: Another previously unknown 78 that not even the Hula Hawaiians have been aware of it's existance! It was released without the bands knowing. It rates as their final Swiss 78.

Hilo Marsch / Rag Of Rags (Holland - Elite Special ELH 3026)

Date Of Release: Ca. 1955
Comments: One of their rare Dutch releases! There were possibly some more of their 78rpm records released in Holland, but I've so far failed to track any of them down! This one was unfortunately sent in wrongly packed by a very nice Dutch fellow, and has arrived in about 20 pieces! Ouch! Thanks anyways for the free record! WANTED!!

THE HULA HAWAIIANS DISCOGRAPHY
PART 2: 10" LPs

Various Artists:WUNSCHKONZERT 1 (Switzerland - Tell 506)

Date Of Release: 1956?
Comments: Ultra rare 10" split LP featuring The Hula Hawaiians and The Baranovas (a great early Harmonica band from Basel, that used to share the stage a lot with The Hula Hawaiians)

Various Artists:WUNSCHKONZERT 2 (Switzerland - Tell 511)

Date Of Release: 1956?
Comments: Ultra rare 10" LP featuring The Hula Hawaiians, The Busketeers Harmonica (Walt Miller's band!), and Body Buser! Body Buser could have been the best Swiss vibraphonist ever, he was even playing with The Hula Hawaiians at some points too! I've picked the date of release of this 10" from Pesche Stähli's Hula Hawaiians discography, but I would rather date this one (as well as the one above) to around 1954, or 1955 myself.

Various Artists: FUER STADT UND LAND 2 (Switzerland - Tell 535)

Date Of Release: 1956?
Comments: 10" LP compilation (of tracks that have previously appeared on four different Tell 78s) featuring two songs each by The Hula Hawaiians (Es Haengt Ein Autoreifen An Der Wand / Song Of The Island (a.k.a. Nani Hawaii) , The Owinawa Hawaiians (Tiger Rag / St. Louis Blues), Jose Minicus Singende Saege (two incredible strange versions of O Sole Mio / Mutterhaende), and Jost Ribary (Purzelbaeume / Trach'e Chilbi).

WANTED!!

Thanks to Carlo Bloetzer for photo!

Various Artists:TRAUMINSEL HAWAII (Switzerland - Tell 547)

Date Of Release: 1956?
Comments: Scarce 10" split LP of tracks by The Hula Hawaiians, and Signers Exotic Serenaders It was released without the knowing of the band. All tracks were previously released on 78 rpm's made by Tell Records.

Many thanks to Sam Mumenthaler for selling me the record.

THE HULA HAWAIIANS DISCOGRAPHY

THE OKINAWA HAWAIIANS - St. Louis Blues / Tiger Rag / THE HAWAIIAN SERENADERS (THE HULA HAWAIIANS) - Hula Blues / Hawaiian War Chant EP (Switzerland - Discoclub DC 1708

Date Of Release: 1955?
Comments: Super rare Swiss club EP! It plays both tracks from the ultra rare Okinawa Hawaiians 78 on Side A, but the 2 cuts by The Hawaiian Serenaders on the flip should have been credited to The Hula Hawaiians (they are identical to the Hula Hawainans tracks!) It was released without the bands knowledge.

THE OKINAWA HAWAIIANS - St. Louis Blues / Tiger Rag / THE HAWAIIAN SERENADERS (THE HULA HAWAIIANS) - Hula Blues / Hawaiian War Chant EP (Switzerland - Discoclub DC 1708

Date Of Release: 1955?
Comments: 2nd pressing with different sleeve, and different label design. Discoclub could have been a sublabel of the Ex Libris record club, although the label-design looks exactly like those from the Denner supermarket label from around the same period.

THE OKINAWA HAWAIIANS - St. Louis Blues / Tiger Rag / THE HAWAIIAN SERENADERS (THE HULA HAWAIIANS) - Hula Blues / Hawaiian War Chant EP (Switzerland - Discoclub DC 1708

Ich Hab Dich So Lieb / Blue Hawaii / Schwarzer Mustang / The Chimpanzee Rock (Switzerland - HMV 7 EVZ 126)

Date Of Release: 1957

Comments: THE ultimate BEST Swiss 50s Rock and Roll record EVER made!! The Chimpanzee Rock is a killer Rockabilly/Hillbilly guitar - instrumental from 1957! It influenced by the lead guitar break from the song Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley And The Coments, which used to be the opening tune from the powerfull, legendary 1955 feature movie Blackboard Jungle starring Vic Morrow, Glenn Ford, Anne Francis, etc. After they've heard the guitar break from Rock Around The Clock in the movie, they've decided to come up with their own unique Rock "N" Roll number! This one is technically easily as masterfully played as any of the very BEST U.S. Rockabilly/Hillbilly instrumentals from the 50s!!!!!

Schwarzer Mustang / Blue Hawaii / The Chimpanzee Rock / Ich Hab Dich So Lieb (Germany - Electrola E40 150 7EWG 8465)

Date Of Release: 1957
Comments: Rare German issue! They were using the drummer of Cedric Dumont's band as session musician (for drummer) on their early records! Cedric Dumont used to be a famous Swiss composer / director that was using several top secretly kept aliases at the one and the same time. Dumont used to be the director of the main orchestra from the Swiss radio for several decades (working at Radio Basel in 1957). Dumont's orchestra would usually back up other musicians on Swiss Television shows, as well as on countless phonograph records too. 98% of Dumont's output used to be super square, and also totally mainstream, but he was using some great musicians (such as the legendary French guitarist Marcel Bianchi, or the equally famous Swiss top drummer Pierre Favre), and Dumont was even producing a couple of surprisingly good numbers under some of his aliases too! I'm still missing out of this German pressing. I've only got an empty cover for it! WANTED!!

Comments: Early vinyl Single with Tell labelsleeve! Pictured is one ultra rare first pressing single with the original center piece still intact! The top deck puts false songinfos: It reads Song Of The Island on the label, but it plays a track called Nani Hawaii.

The flip plays one truly fabulous German sung country and western / hillbilly version of the Carson J. Robison classic There's A Bridle Hangin' On The Wall that is so much better than the Pferdehalfter version above!

Comments: One of their best and rarest ones! THE HULA HAWAIIANS DISCOGRAPHY
PART 6: Related EP: THE HONOLULU GIRLS

Above: THE HONOLULU GIRLS featuring Valerie "Vally" Claus (3rd from the left)

The Honolulu Girls were an all-girl Hawaii band from Basel city, Switzerland featuring Valerie "Vally" Claus (Guitar), Heidi Bürgin (Hawaii-Guitar), Hannelore Bürgin (Bass), and Rita Flubacher (Ukulele).

The four girls got their lessons from The Hula Hawaiians. Vally was first learing to play the Ukulele from The Hula Hawaiians lead crooner Max Zimmerli very early, while she had still been in her pre teens. A couple of years later, sometime after the reforming of The Hula Hawaiians in 1955, she decided to drop the ukulele in favour to get guitar lessons from The Hula Hawaiians highly gifted lead guitarist Werner Kunz. Heidi got her Hawaii - Guitar lessons from The Hula Hawaiians band leader Walter Roost. It had been Walter's idea to bring the girls together.

The Honolulu Girls could have been existing from possibly around ca. 1957(?), until December 1961, although it's NOT clear what year they have formed in, it definitely must have been sometime after 1955!

After the split of The Honolulu Girls (they broke up because most of the girls got married) Vally joined an all-girl big band from Bad Nauheim, Germany called Hanny's Dutch Sisters in January of 1962, with whoom she stayed until the band finally called it a day in 1964! She then moved on to play with a brandnew Beatles influenced Beat band from Bad Nauheim, Germany called Charly And His Dolls. They've played mainly for the American G.I.'s that have been stationed in Germany.

After the split of Charly And His Dolls in 1966, Vally continued to play with a German all girl 7-piece band named The Blue Lady's for one year, until they folded, and were reformed as The Girls. Vally then stayed with The Girls until 1975. Later on, towards the late '90s, Vally became an occasional member of The Hula Hawaiians (on rhythm guitar, and usually for one, or two set's only), with whoom she still plays with (whenever she likes to!) today.

THE HONOLULU GIRLS - Hawaii-Aloha EP: On The Beach At Waikiki / Kaiwahu-March / Hilo-Marsh / Aloha Oe (Switzerland - Beaton BEA E-3)

Date Of Release: 1960, or 1961
Comments: There exists two different pressings of The Honolulu Girls super rare lone EP. The issue pictured comes with very light blue labels, as well as with a completely different hardcover picture sleeve! The Titles were hand written by I think always the same person on some of the Beaton record covers only. Beaton has been one of many obscure Swiss "Club" labels from the 50s. It was only available by mailorder in exchange for a couple of Beaton tokens, and some cash! I believe that this could have been the first issue of it! There were only a very FEW hundred copies totally of this EP ever made!

THE HONOLULU GIRLS - Hawaii-Aloha EP: On The Beach At Waikiki / Kaiwahu-March / Hilo-Marsh / Aloha Oe (Switzerland - Beaton BEA E-3)

Date Of Release: 1960, or 1961
Comments: With completely different hardcover Picture sleeve, and more dark blue labels! It sounds pretty close to The Hula Hawaiians versions, one can easily hear that they have learned their lessons from The Hula Hawaiians. One truly excellent record, especially for an all girl band! This record has been sent in as a free present by some very cool local Swiss rockabilly and country + western radio Dj from around the town of St. Gallen that has seen my blog! Thank you Rolf for the free record!

PART 7: Related 78 RPM: KAPELLE BERNER MUTZE

KAPELLE BERNER MUTZE - Traumbilder / Liebesreigen (Switzerland - Tell Record 26276)

Date Of Release: 1954, or 1955
Comments: The track Liebesreigen features Walti Roost of The Hula Hawaiians on Hawaii Guitar. They've asked him if he could play the Hawaii Guitar on this track, and he did!

A strange combination of Hawaii music mixed with an ancient almost classical chamber music like Swiss folk music style that sounds even much older than the record already is.

PARTIAL DISCOGRAPHY OF OTHER PIONEERING SWISS HAWAII BANDS
PART 2: 78 RPM's: THE RUWIRO HAWAIIANS

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Waikiki / Song Of The Island (Switzerland - Elite Record 2045)

Date Of Release: 1944

Comments: The Ruwiro Hawaiians from Zurich could rate as the 2nd great Swiss Hawaii band, after Jerry Thomas' band. This great unfortunately long forgotten pioneering Swiss Hawaii band was already able to reach some international success with a couple of their records in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and possibly some other countries as well!

The Ruwiro Hawaiians were led by the great Swiss Hawaii- (Steel-) Guitar player Rolf Sidler. They were cutting mainly instrumental records only, and I personally like all of them great!

There exists at least three pressings of their debut 78 from the Elite Record label. The first pressing pictured at the top left had the C.C. (Copyright Controll) info listed directly under the golden line in the center (labelcolor = dark red), while the 2nd pressing (pictured at the top right) came with slightly adjusted labels (labelcolor = a lighter dark red). The 3rd pressing (pictured below) came with entirely differently styled red labels that were excluding the "ELEKTRISCH AUFGENOMMEN" info:

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Heimat Deine Sterne / Sing Nachtigall, Sing (Switzerland - Elite Record 2046)

Date Of Release: 1944

Comments:

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Ruwiro Fox / Leb Wohl Hawaii (Switzerland - Elite Record 2047)

Date Of Release: 1944

Comments: The labels on the A-Side are revealing the 2nd names of the three Ruwiro Hawaiians members: Senn, (Rolf) Sidler, and Schmidli.

The instrumentation on both tracks includes bass, steel guitar, as well as the ukulele. I'd probably suspect Senn on bass, Schmidli on the Ukulele, along with Rolf Sidler playing the lead Hawaii guitar, and I believe that the same lineup could have been used on all of their records from the Elite Record (Elite Special) label.

Great mid tempo guitar instrumental on the A-Side, coupled with a slow sleeper for flip-side!

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Zwei Gitarren Am Meer / Klaenge Von Hawaii (Switzerland - Elite Record 2072)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments:

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Melody: Song Of The Island / Minnehaha, Minnedans (Switzerland - Elite Record 2073)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments:

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Traeumen Von Der Suedsee / Hawaii - Fantasie (Switzerland - Elite Record 2081)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments:

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Begin The Beguine / Candlelight Waltz (Switzerland - Elite Record 2082)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments:

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Hawaii Medley / Canzonella (Switzerland - Elite Record 2094)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments:

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Romanze / Symphony (Switzerland - Elite Record 2115)

Date Of Release: 1946

Comments: Highly skillfully played 2-sider! The A-Side was written by Oscar Gautschi. There also exists another early Swiss Hawaii record by Oscar Gautschi Und Sein Hawaii Orchester featuring Rolf Sidler (steel guitar)

RUWIRO HAWAIIANS - Tahiti / La Paloma - Farewell Hawai (Switzerland - Elite Record 2116)

Date Of Release: 1946

Comments:

Comments:

PARTIAL DISCOGRAPHY OF OTHER PIONEERING SWISS HAWAII BANDS
PART 3: 78 RPM's / IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

LYS ASSIA + HAWAIIAN ENSEMBLE ALOHA ISLANDERS
Die Weissen Blueten Von Tahni (The White Blossems Of Tahni) / On Linger Longer Island (Switzerland - Decca F 49531)

Date Of Release: 1952

Comments: The slow German sung A-side is about average, but the English sung flip (On Linger Longer Island) is just brilliant, and swings in real cool Hawaiian style!

The very best song by Lys Assia that I have ever heard, simply because it does NOT sound like the stuck up Edith Piaf type of crooner Lys Assia at all! Her vocals on this song are just great, and totally different to her usual style..

Lys Assia was born on March 3. 1924 in Lenzburg, Aargau, Switzerland. The Aloha Islanders came from Basel, Switzerland!

One of the best early Swiss Hawaii records there is!
Great record (and I've previously never thought that I would ever like one record by Lys Assia in my life!)

LYS ASSIA + HAWAIIAN ENSEMBLE ALOHA ISLANDERS Maerchen Von Tahiti (Pagan Love Song) / Suedsee Traum (Hilo Moon) (Decca F 49532)

Date Of Release: 1952

Comments: It was also released as Decca F 43405

MARCEL BIANCHI WITH RADIO GENEVA'S HAWAIAN BAND
- I'm A Little On The Lonely Side / Don't Fence Me In (Switzerland - Elite Special 4404)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments: Both sides of this Swiss only release were recorded in Switzerland featuring the legendary French gipsy swing guitarist Marcel Bianchi on Hawaii Guitar!

The book Swiss Jazz Disco by Hippenmeyer puts 1940 for release date, along with the WRONG release number of Elite Special 4004. OUTCH!!!

MARCEL BIANCHI WITH RADIO GENEVA'S HAWAIAN BAND
Dream / Summertime (Switzerland - Elite Special 4405)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments: Both sides of this Swiss only release were recorded in Switzerland featuring the legendary French gipsy swing guitarist Marcel Bianchi on Hawaii Guitar!

It was recorded and released in 1945!

The book Swiss Jazz Disco by Hippenmeyer puts 1940 for release date, along with the WRONG release number of Elite Special 4005. OUTCH!!!

MARCEL BIANCHI WITH RADIO GENEVA'S HAWAIAN BAND
Music In My Dreams / The Anniversary Waltz (Switzerland - Elite Special 4406)

Date Of Release: 1945

Comments: Both sides of this Swiss only release were recorded in Switzerland featuring the legendary French gipsy swing guitarist Marcel Bianchi on Hawaii Guitar!

It was recorded as well as released in 1945!

The book Swiss Jazz Disco by Hippenmeyer puts 1940 for release date, along with the WRONG release number of Elite Special 4006. OUTCH!!!

HAWAIANORCHESTER MIT XYLOPHON
Suesses Mondlicht / ? (Switzerland - Elite Record 2528)

Date Of Release: 1929, or 1930

Comments: Early Swiss release in the Hawaii style. It was manufactured by the Kalophon Record pressing plant in Waedenswil, nearby Zurich.

HAWAIIAN ENSEMBLE ALOHA ISLANDERS Eine Kleine Serenade Aus Dem Maerchenland Hawai / Kamehameha Rag (Switzerland - Decca 27409)

Date Of Release: 1951, or 1952

Comments: Early Hawaii band from Basel, Switzerland! They^ve been releasing some more records on the Decca label, including even a few ones with Lys Assia.

HAWAIIAN - GUITARREN - Dark Hawaiian Eyes / Hawaii Von Koenigin Lilinukalani (Switzerland - Elite Record 1350)

Date Of Release: Ca. 1932, or 1933

Comments: Unknown, anonymous Swiss Hawaii band from the early '30s! There is no real band name given on the labels, it solely reads "Hawaiian Guitars," which is something that you would usually only get on some cheap "Supermarket" pressings. This is still a very good Swiss Hawaii record.

Pictured is one rare 2nd pressing of the record from around 1938 that was already manufactured by the Turicaphon AG pressing plant in Riedikon.

The impossible to find first pressing record was originally manufactured by the Kalophon Record pressing plant in Waedenswil (Zurich) while the Elite Record label was still being owned by Kalophon. The Elite Record label (along with the Kalophon pressing plant, and label) was sold to Turicaphon AG in 1933, but the Elite Record label itself has been around since the 1920's.

HAWAIIN - GUITARREN - SOLO Love's Melody / Hawaiin Mother Of Mine (Switzerland - Elite Record 1123)

Date Of Release:

Comments: Unknown, anonymous Hawaii band from around the 1920's! Possibly not a Swiss Hawaii band. but rather a license pressing of foreign Hawaii tunes. I still have to research the release date for this one, but it seems to rate as the oldest Swiss Hawaii record that I've ever came across.
The pressing was made by the Kalophon Record pressing plant in Waedenswil, nearby Zurich.

Somehow -- especially back during the early days -- the Swiss never managed to handle the english language properly, but on this release they've done especially wrong! The band name is a corrupted / incorrect mix between the German and English languages.

BOB HUBER Song Of The Islands / Sweet Memories (Switzerland - HMV HE 672)

Date Of Release: 1943, or 1944

Comments: Two sources read that it was released in 1944, while another third source reads that the previous record from the Swiss HMV label (HE 671) was recorded in February 1943.

BOB HUBER Hawaii / Komplimente (Switzerland - HMV HE 685)

Date Of Release:  Ca. 1944

Comments: Bob Huber used to be a very famous pioneering Jazz musician from the small Swiss town of Schoenewerd (Solothurn). He's been recording many other records in the Jazz style.

MILGRA HAWAIIANS Dreaming Of Miami / Blue Moon Over Hawaii (Switzerland - Tell Record 29240)

Date Of Release: Ca. 1953, or 1954

Comments: Unknown Hawaii band with organ on the Tell label out of Binningen / Basel, Switzerland. Sounds a bit dusty, and not exactly as good as the one below!

MILGRA HAWAIIANS - Abendglocken / Hinter Blauen Wogen Da Liegt Mein Hawai (Switzerland - Tell Record 29243)

Date Of Release: Ca. 1953, or 1954

Comments: Fabulous 2-sider featuring one completely unique guitar - organ sound!

ORIGINAL HAWAIIAN SERENADERS Capri Fischer / Missouri Waltz (Switzerland - Tell Record / Le Chant Du Monde S 29008)

Date Of Release: 1949

Comments:

ORIGINAL HAWAIIAN SERENADERS Perlen Von Hawaii / Traeume Von Der Suedsee (Switzerland - Tell Record / Le Chant Du Monde S 29009)

Date Of Release: 1949

Comments:

ORIGINAL HAWAIIAN SERENADERS Wenn Einmal In Fernen Tagen / Ein Strauss Roter Rosen (Switzerland - Tell Record / Le Chant Du Monde S 29143)

Date Of Release: 1950

Comments:

TEDDY STAUFFER MIT SEINEN ORIGINAL TEDDIES Tiger Rag / Melodies From Hawaii (Switzerland - Elite Special 4019)

Date Of Release: Spring 1940

Comments: Famous Swiss Jazz band from the 30s / 40s. Their only true Hawaiian record.

TEXAS DUO Sing, Gondoliere, Sing / Baby (Switzerland - Decca 27110)

Date Of Release: 1948

Comments: Well known Swiss
Gene Autry / Roy Rogers influenced Country and Western / Hillbilly duo from around Zurich in the 40s, consisting of Yvonne Furrer (vocals), and her husband Paul Furrer (vocals, guitar).

They've been releasing no less but fifty (50) different 78s in the Country and Western / Hillbilly style during the 2nd half of the '40s! Few of them are still easy to find today, others are very rare!

Baby is easily one of my favorite tracks by them! It's a swinging Country and Western number featuring  some typical Hawaii lead guitar work, that could have either been played by some unknown Swiss Hawaii guitarist, or by Paul Furrer himself!

Baby has got a lot of "Hit - appeal", it's almost a miracle that the Texas Duo were not able to land a huge "Hit - record" with this truly fabulous super catchy track.

They've been accompagned by Walter Baumgartner's band on both sides.

Baby rates as the faster played track of the two, so the Decca label-infos are not very correct.

Both tracks were penned by the very famous Swiss composer Artur Beul.

Baby is the only true Hawaiian blended track by the Texas Duo that I've heard so far.

Comments:
The MECOLICO sticker on the label indicates that the record was actually made in Switzerland! Not an easy one to date. I'll have to check first.

Date Of Release:

Comments: I've no idea where they came from. Joop is a Dutch name, but his 2nd name is undoubtably Swedish. He could have been a Swedish guitarist.

FERERA AND PAALUHI Cielto Lindo / O Sole Mio (Switzerland - Odeon O -4026)

Date Of Release:

Comments:
The MECOLICO sticker on the label indicate that the record was actually made in Switzerland!

The stampers, labels, as well as possibly even the shellac (in it's raw form) were most likely sent in from Germany, but the record itself was guaranteed pressed in Switzerland!

The label artwork seems to match exactly with the German issue.

The matrice numbers read WS81035 A on the A-Side, as well as WS 81035 B on the flipside.

KEN GRIFFIN, HAMMOND ORGAN WITH ANDY NELSON, HAWAII GUITAR A Song Of Old Haway / Drifting And Dreaming (Switzerland - Columbia MZ 951)

Comments: Most of his records were probably pressed in Switzerland. Here's one of his few Hawaiian ones!

Date Of Release: Ca. 1949?

Comments:

HAWAIENTRIO TAU MOE - Aloha - Oe / Leise Rauscht Es Am Missouri (Switzerland - Elite Special 8574)

Date Of Release:

Comments:
The legendary Tau Moe and his family have been touring Europe a couple of times. He was usually sharing the stage with his friends The Hula Hawaiians at his concerts in Basel! Tau More somehow even ended up on the Swiss Elite Special label. Some of his Swiss releases could be unique, and of big historical importance!

Comments: The same record again, but with slightly different labels!

Date Of Release:

Comments: Super rare early Swiss 78rpm by the legendary Andy Iona from Honolulu, Hawaii. His name got missspelled on the label, it reads Jona, instead of Iona! The name of his band should have also read the ISLANDERS on the labels too!

WALTER KALUNA By By Blues / Waikiki (Switzerland - Telefunken A 10052)

Date Of Release: 1939

Comments: Walter Kaluna seems to be a highly gifted guitarist from Hawaii. He's been mentioned inside Billboard (issue from July 11. 1942)

Pictured is the Swiss issue, which was moulded / shaped diffently (with a circle towards the center) than the German issue of it (the German issue puts the labels entirely flat!)

The matrice number of the Swiss issue adds the letters SCH in front of the two different matrice numbers for the label A- and B- sides which is unique to the Swiss pressing only.

KANUI AND LULA Oua Oua / Tomi Tomi (Switzerland - Parlophone R 1640) Special edition!

Date Of Release:

Comments: Swiss only special edition of this great 2 - sided classic! Tomi Tomi was later on comped on some volume of the Desperate Rock And Roll LP compilation series. Definitely the best version of Tomi Tomi ever recorded!

SAM KU WEST - Farewell Blues / Hawaiian Hula Blues (Switzerland - Banner 2161)

Date Of Release: Ca. 1927

Comments:  The MECHANLICENZ stickers on the labels indicate that the record was actually made in Switzerland! The sticker reads that the amount of 15 Swiss Rappen were paid for the songwritter / publishing to MECHANLICENZ.

The stampers could have been sent in from the U.S., but the record itself was guaranteed pressed in Switzerland! The label artwork seems to match with the U.S. pressing.

Must be totally rare as a Swiss pressing! My copy of this fantastic record is unfortunately totally beat up, and cracked! The labels are still OK!

The U.S. pressing of this record was originally made in 1927, but the Swiss issue pictured was most likely made in the early '30s.

PARTIAL DISCOGRAPHY OF OTHER PIONEERING SWISS HAWAII BANDS
PART 4: Vinyl records from around 1950 - 1965 Part 1:
THE TAHITI HAWAIIANS

THE TAHITI HAWAIIANS (1958) L-R: Alex Nussbaumer (Ukulele, Age: 22), Max Winystorf (Guitar, Age: 19), Alfred Jappert (Hawaii-Guitar, Age: 29), and Rolf Flueck (Ukulele, Age: 20)

This highly important Hawaii band from Basel, Switzerland should have definitely been featured inside the otherwise fantastically made book "Aloha Basilea (The Hula Hawaiians, + 50 Jahre Entertainment In Basel)" by Matti/Matti/Engeler, but they were not, thanks to some unfortunately unknowing authors.

Original letterhead: Basler Artistenverein (1957)
The Tahiti Hawaiians were formed in around 1956 by the Hawaii - guitarist Alfred Jappert (r.i.p.). Their first line up seems to be unknown to the few ex - band members that have survived.

Highly important and notorious, since because their noble band leader Alfred Jappert also used to be the president of the "Basler Artistenverein" (formed by Alfred Jappert on September 12. 1957,)  a union of 34 musicians, dancers, comedians, magicians, knife throwers, and other vaudeville show people from around Basel that has been donating all of their profits to the orphans, and homeless kids of the orphanage from the town of Basel over the years.

THE TAHITI HAWAIIANS (1958) L-R: Alex Nussbaumer, Rolf Flueck, Alfred Jappert, and Max Winystorf

The Tahiti Hawaiians classic 2nd lineup from 1957 - summer 1959 was including Alfred Jappert (Hawaii-Guitar, Vocals), Max Winystorf (Guitar, Vocals), Alex Nussbaumer (Ukulele, Vocals), and Rolf Flueck (Ukulele, Vocals).   With this line up a total of four 45s, and two EPs were recorded for the Tell Records label between 1958 - 1959..

The Tahiti Hawaiians unreleased debut recordings were taped on Monday, March 17th 1958 (between 7:45PM - 10:30PM), by the national Swiss radio at radio studio, Zurich for the "Grand Prix Brunnenhof" radio broadcasting from March 21. 1958 (8:00 PM - 8:30PM). Those recordings have never been aired again. Nobody except for maybe the national Swiss radio seems to own a copy of those rare, early historic recordings.

One of their 45s was interestingly including a fine German sung country and western version of the Hal Blake track Satins And Lace (entitled Tabak Und Rum) that was coupled with one loose, inept rock and roll cover version of the Freddie Bell And The Bellboys track Giddy Up A Ding Dong. Thanks to this record (their one and only rock and roll record,) some of the Swiss rockabilly collectors already got wind of The Tahiti Hawaiians ultra rare version of Giddy Up A Ding Dong by word of mouth several decades ago.

Alex Nussbaumer remembered that their guitarist Max Winystorf (r.i.p.) used to be responsible for the incorporating of a few rock and roll tunes into their sets, and he was adding that they would usually play one rock and roll number to close out their gigs.

After the bands' split in 1959, Alfred Jappert continued to play out as The Tahiti Hawaiians for until the late 60s accompagned by his kids on Ukulele (and initially joined by Max Winystorf (Guitar) for the first couple of years). It's been rumored that papa Jappert could have recorded one whole Tahiti Hawaiians LP with his kids, which is true, but such an LP does not exist, because the record companies were not interested in recordings that were featuring Jappert accompagned by just his two kids on Ukulele.

L-R: Fredy Jappert, Alfred Jappert,
Max "Bob" Winystorf, Bruno Jappert
The "Weltstadt-Variete" poster at the right hails from a show in Aarau, that was presented by the Aargauer Artistenverein back in April 1961. They've undoubtably worked together as a union with the Basler Artistenverein. At the bottom right of the poster you can view a photo of the final lineup of the Tahiti Hawaiians that has got Jappert pictured with his eleven, and twelve year old kids Bruno and Fredy (also known as the "Ukulele-Boys").

Max Winystorf later on became a member the Trio Grande. He could also be spotted as "Der Mann mit dem Bass" (The man with the bass) on Swiss Television from time to time.

Date Of Release:

Comments: Split EP featuring 4 songs by the Aloha Serenaders, plus 2 organ instrumentals by Inez Cavallario. The Hawaii guitarist from the Aloha Serenaders sounds like Walter Roost of The Hula Hawaiians, but the rest of the band does not sound much like a Hawaii band at all!

Comments: Houla - Houp is one super funny Hawaii Rock And Roll novelty number!

NINO PASSAVANTI Hula - Hula - Loves Tschi - Bum - Baby (Switzerland - Antro-Cord 3002)

Date Of Release:

Comments: Great twisted Swiss Beat band from around the early mid 60s.
The topside cuts into the classic track Aloha Oe, and is definitely in the Hawaii style with light touches of Beat and Twist only. It sounds a bit like an updated 60s version of Hawaii Music!

They've made two 45s, plus one great EP including the four songs from their 45s. All self released on the band's own label, and very hard to find.

I'm still searching for a copy of their EP.

VICO TORRIANI - Waikiki / Grazie (Germany - Decca D 18 634)

Date Of Release:

Comments: Comes with a Hawaiian Music influenced flipside!

WAIKY HAWAIENS Drei Braune Maedchen (Switzerland - Disco-Club DC 1704)

Date Of Release:

Comments: Various Artists split EP including one melodic German sung vocal tune by the badly misspelled WAIKY HAWAIENS that doesn't sound a bit as if it was recorded by a Hawaii band! It rather sounds like some dusty German south sea Schlager music from the '50s..

JOE WILKENS, DIE SIXTONS, UND KING-GITANO MIT SEINEM ENSEMBLE - Bambina / Statt Weiss Trag Rot / JOE WILKENS, DORIS MAY, DIE MODERATOS, LOUIS FREICHEL ALL STAR COMBO - Hula LiebeAuch Du Hast Dein Schicksal In Der Hand (Switzerland - Pan / Grammoclub Ex Libris GC 4534)

Date Of Release:

Comments: Not a true Hawaii record! It contains an ecco loaded German - sung version of the Hawaii music influenced Rock And Roll track Hula Love (originally done by Buddy Knox)

Not sure about the bands' origns (they possibly came from Austria), but the SIXTONS were later on releasing another 45 on the German - made International label. A few of the releases from the International label do also seem to exist as Austrian, and Swiss pressings too.

  1. This discography won't be continued as planed, and there won't be any future discographies / bandbios from us either!

To blame for this are all the countless ruthless / unfair people out there that have stolen photos, and infos from this blog without asking for permission.

Those people seem to have zero respect for copyright. Some of you have stolen in an totally unacceptable way, by putting wrong credits onto photos that clearly hail from our collection, which is regarded as a plain robbery in our eyes!
